PostHeaderIcon A Budget Travelers’ Guide to Chicago

Article by Paul scottyn

The spiritual home of blues and jazz, Chicago is at the heart of America’s Midwest and known for its picturesque skyline, which trails along Lake Michigan. A vibrant urban travel destination, Chicago is an immediate favorite for budget travelers.

Accommodation

There aren’t many youth hostels in Chicago, but the ones there are, fortunately, are excellent. Of these, the HI Chicago stands out for its prices and great central location, while Day Inn Lincoln Park North and Arlington International House are both nicely located near Lincoln Park.

Sights

Chicago has a veritable smorgasbord of iconic sights and attractions for visitors to enjoy. Huge parks and public art abounds here, as do noted museums of science and art, modern architecture and even sandy beaches.

Tourists are usually drawn to the attractions which are mainly located downtown, but locals will unanimously agree that travelers haven’t truly experienced the essence of “Chi town” until you venture into the city’s many neighborhoods.

Local residents make sense of the city by breaking it down it “sides” to the north, west and south of the central business district known as the Loop. Downtown is the centre for work and play and offers opportunities for shopping.

Events

Plenty of events are on offer for travelers to Chicago. Many neighborhoods offer many festivals during spring, summer and fall. In the summer, the Grand Park in the Loop hosts four major music festivals – Blues Fest and Gospel Fest in June, Lollapalooza (aka “Indie Rock Fest”) in August, and Jazz Fest over Labor Day Weekend.

A popular attraction is the tour of the Chicago Theatre, which encompasses an architectural and historical tour of the building including the grand lobby areas, majestic auditorium and backstage space (when possible) where performers take to the stage throughout the year.

Food

Due to Chicago’s history of German and Polish immigration, it is the king of hotdogs. A Chicago hot dog is always beef, typically served on a poppy-seed bun, and topped with mustard, diced tomatoes, pickle and chili.

Unfamiliar locations, when we are on vacation for instance, seem to be the most likely times when things will start to go wrong. OK, problems occur from time to time but if you can prevent them in the first place, travel can be a less stressful experience where you may end up out of pocket. Situations like this can even escalate and it is not uncommon where people are reluctant to leave their room or even have to spend time in a Police station trying to explain the problem. The most important weapon in your armory to travel safely is your common sense so don’t dismiss this invaluable ability if you want to enjoy your vacation.

Trust your instincts if something doesn’t feel right, do something about it. If you are heading out on the town to discover new bars or taking photos at the local fish market, do you really need to carry your passport, traveler’s checks, extra cash, credit cards and plane tickets? Expensive and necessary items like identification tickets for example should be left at the hotel in their safe or the room safe if you have one; it is much easier to recover your vacation if you only lose a few important belongings instead of all of them. One easy thing to do to protect your money is not carry all of it around at once or leave it in just one location where a thief can steal everything you have quite easily.

Unfortunately, the convenience of having two credit cards on the same account in your own country can be a problem in a foreign land so another travel safely tip is to use two completely separate accounts; this provides a back-up should one be lost or stolen. For some time now, thieves have been perfecting the art of snatching handbags and cameras on straps over the shoulder; but by placing the strap over the head and laying it across the chest, this is much harder to do without cutting the strap. Some of the easiest crimes involve snatch thieves that may actually work in teams; they locate unsuspecting victims who have a bag on their shoulder for instance that can be easily grabbed by a passing cycle or scooter. Criminals love tourists as they are usually considered easy prey and we all underestimate how very proficient they are at relieving people of their personal belongings.

This complacency can cause problems because these people make their living doing this sort of thing but just a little extra vigilance can make it much harder for them to take what does not belong to them. One way to help reduce the chances of things being stolen is by using a back pack with a padlock, this makes it more difficult to get into and therefore acts as a deterrent.
